this was so good!!! and you really get at what is so beautifully energising about having a reading community: people to text about Ben Lerner or Cărtărescu or the best/worst short stories in the latest Paris Review…having those relationships (imo) tends to drive more reading and make the reading itself more rewarding

Definitely agree that having a wide variety of books you're currently reading plays a large role in cultivating the desire to read.

Also, nothing is more frustrating than the sf coffee shops and how they hate the fact that you are there. Would it really be that difficult to open up a coffee shop with couches and soft lighting?

You brought up great points! All of which I agree with, but what are your thoughts on e-readers? I've heard some people say it doesn't work for them, mostly because they find it difficult to focus since its just another screen at the end of the day. I honestly found this to be a bit of a poser-like response. For me it works since its so convenient to carry around.

they’re ok, but not my favorite!

Good stuff. It's this whole American obsession with productivity and only doing something for gain that's so detrimental to enjoying life. Sometimes you just want to read something because you feel like it. Reading isn't a damn job.

I really liked Solenoid btw, prob my favorite novel I read last year, but it's not one I recommend to everyone.
